An .eml file is one email saved in the standard Internet mail format (RFC 5322). Apple Mail, Thunderbird, Gmail's "Download message" and most other mail apps produce them. Open one below to read it or save it as a PDF.
Steps
- Open the .eml file above.
- Check the message and click Save as PDF.
- Pick Save as PDF as the printer and save.
On an iPhone or iPad, open the file from the Files app into this page, tap Save as PDF, then use Share › Save to Files in the print preview.
Where .eml files come from
| App | How to save a message as .eml |
|---|---|
| Gmail (web) | Open the message › ⋮ menu › Download message |
| Apple Mail | Drag the message to the desktop, or File › Save As › Raw Message Source |
| Thunderbird | File › Save As › File |
| Outlook | Outlook saves .msg instead; this viewer opens both |
Good to know
- Character sets: older emails in Western European, Japanese or other legacy encodings are decoded so accented letters show correctly.
- Forwarded emails attached as files open with Open.
- winmail.dat inside an .eml (sent from Outlook in Rich Text) also opens with Open, which reveals the real attachments.
- Attachments are not part of the PDF. Save them with Download.
